Sam Elliott - T.L. Norris

Sam Elliott was born on August 9, 1944, in Sacramento, California, and grew up largely in Oregon before moving toward acting in the late 1960s. His deep, unmistakable baritone voice and old-school Western bearing made him one of Hollywood's most reliable character actors for over five decades, long before Landman or 1883 brought him back into the mainstream spotlight.

Elliott's breakout Western role came as Virgil Earp in Tombstone (1993), a performance that cemented his reputation as one of the genre's most authentic modern voices. He became a cult favorite for his role as "The Stranger" narrating The Big Lebowski (1998), a part that introduced his voice and drawl to an entirely new generation of fans. Decades of steady, respected work followed, including the Netflix comedy The Ranch (2016–2020) alongside Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson.

Elliott's career reached a new commercial and critical peak with A Star Is Born (2018), Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, in which Elliott played Bobby Maine, the older half-brother and road manager of Cooper's character. The performance earned Elliott his first Academy Award nomination, at 74 years old — recognition that had eluded him for most of a career built on quieter, foundational work rather than lead roles.

In 2021, Elliott took on the lead role of Shea Brennan in 1883, Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone prequel following the Dutton family's original journey west. The role won Elliott a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2023 — the first SAG win of his career, which he called "the most meaningful acknowledgment of my 55-year career." 1883 also marked Elliott's first major collaboration with Sheridan, establishing a relationship that would bring him into the Landman cast a few years later.

Joining Landman as T.L. Norris

Elliott joined Landman in Season 2 as T.L. Norris, the estranged and abusive father of Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), arriving in a wheelchair that immediately signals a man whose power has diminished but not disappeared. T.L.'s Season 2 arc peaks in the episode "Dancing Rainbows," built around Dottie's funeral, where Elliott and Thornton deliver what critics widely called the season's most powerful hour — a raw account of addiction, childhood trauma, and a father and son confronting decades of damage neither has ever said out loud.

Elliott has described being drawn to T.L.'s complexity: a man capable of real cruelty who is also, in his own broken way, trying to hold onto whatever family he has left. That tension — menace and tenderness sitting in the same scene — is the same quality that made Elliott's Western roles endure for fifty years, now turned toward playing a father instead of a lawman.

Season 3 and Beyond

T.L. returns for Season 3 as part of CTT Oil Exploration, the independent company Tommy launches after being fired from M-Tex. T.L.'s Season 2 relationship with Cheyenne (real name Penny) — evolving from unconventional physical therapy into genuine companionship — is one of the character threads left open heading into the new season, alongside the broader question of whether T.L. can be trusted as a partner rather than a liability to the family business he spent decades damaging.
